Many Christians today live in a miserable state of bondage to sin. They pray and resolve to do better. They suppress sinful urges and desires. And they think this is the normal Christian life. But they never overcome sin. So what are we to do? How do we overcome sin?

First, we must recognize that all sin flows out of a voluntary preference, or state of commitment, to please ourselves. All outward actions, motives, and intentions flow out of this selfishness. Can we suppress selfishness by resolution? Certainly not.

Second, we must see that love is the fulfillment of the law. Is love produced by resolution? No. We may abstain from gratifying a sinful desire, but that doesn't produce the love of God in the heart.

The Bible clearly states that we overcome sin by faith in Jesus Christ. In very practical terms, this means that you make a commitment to Jesus. This commitment is that you will give all of your love and affection to him. When you open the door of your heart to Jesus this way, His Spirit comes and takes residence in you. This is conversion. Now, the indwelling Christ will take up your whole soul. He will shed the love of God abroad in your heart. He will bring your heart in line with his, and regulate all of your desires.

Thus, it is by faith in Jesus Christ that we receive the Holy Spirit as an inward power who stimulates and directs our activity. God's purifying influence is received into the very center of our being.

If you haven't made the choice to love Jesus first and foremost--more than even your own life--will you do so now? You will then receive the Holy Spirit, and overcome all sin!

If you liked this message and want to learn more about the indwelling Christ, listen to our recent broadcast, "Christ in You."

This broadcast was inspired by Charles Finney's lecture, "How to Overcome Sin."

In today's classic sermon, Pastor Ray distinguishes the "Life on God's Terms" with the "Kingdom of Cain" who wanted to have be in charge of his own life. Despite Cain's great sin, God still called after him and his call is that we lay down our lives in service to Him. Will you be a Cain or a Daniel? God never forces us to serve him but yet he continually calls us to lay down our lives to Him. https://www.nationalprayerchapel.com/06-25-2016-the-kingdom-of-cain-saturday-sermon-classic-october-2006-2/?feed_id=176&_unique_id=643165783b58a

Judas?

Judas? Judas had a hidden agenda and would... Judas had a hidden agenda and would not accept Jesus for who he is because his expectations were not being met. Have you dealt with this Judas spirit or will you allow it to destroy you? You need not be a Judas but must allow Jesus to fully change you and deal with bitterness, resentment, pride, judgment and/or your lack of love. Do it quickly because this Judas spirit will quickly lead to betrayal and you will become a betrayer. https://nationalprayerchapel.com/?p=10162&feed_id=4077

(Note: Since the broadcast on January 7 further told the story of John Newton, we are posting the broadcast from October 14.) Can God save the worst of us? The hymn Amazing Grace that has touched the lives of millions was written by a very unlikely candidate to have embraced the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This beautiful hymn of Grace was written by a slave trader. John Newton was a hardened man who had sailed the world, seen it all and profited from the buying and selling of human beings. Sometimes the very worst can become the very best.
